A new research network "Barents International Political Economy" (BIPE 2010-2013) aims at advancing research collaboration on the challenges of sustainable development in the Barents region. The Barents region covers the northern most parts of Nordic countries and Northwest Russia. The research network and its research will provide new and multidisciplinary scientific information on the development problematics facing the Barents region.
The First BIPE workshop will focus on two topics:
- Governance of development in the Barents region: The research network will investigate the historical, legal, and political contexts of the region and its development in order to understand the complexities and dynamics of sustainable development. An additional focus will examine the relationship between governance, sustainable development, and the multiple perceptions of security (economic, environmental, human, national) that are currently playing a political role in the region.
- Gendered development of the Barents region: Much of the economic potential and development in the Barents regions focuses on activities that traditionally are considered male activities and professions, such as mining, transportation, forestry and energy industry. The aim of the research network is to highlight the consequences of this gendered development and study alternative ways of understanding economic potential and development and the role of gender in sustainable development. The broad understanding of security includes also gender-related development concerns.
