The Northern Institute for Environmental and Minority Law (NIEM) at the Arctic Centre organizes a workshop on “Ice Law” on Saturday, 8th April, 2017. The workshop is open for all interested.
There will be academic presentations on the topic by scholars from Finland and abroad. Invited guests includes: Dr. Richard Caddell, Senior Research Associate and a Nippon Foundation Senior Nereus Fellow in International Fisheries Law at Utrecht University; Prof. Michael Byers, Canada Research Chair in Global Politics and International Law at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver; and Prof. Viatcheslav Gavrilov, Professor of International Law at the Far Eastern Federal University, Russia.
The workshop is organized as part of the Ice Law Project - an interdisciplinary project hosted at the Durham University’s Centre for Borders Research, UK. The project seeks to investigate the potential for a legal framework that acknowledges the complex geophysical environment in the world’s frozen regions and explores the impact that an ice-sensitive legal system would have on topics ranging from the everyday activities of Arctic residents to the territorial foundations of the modern state.
Prof. Timo Koivurova at the Arctic Centre leads one of the work packages in cooperation with the UArctic Thematic Network on Arctic Law.
