Human Security in the Arctic

« Takaisin11.9.2017 9:30–11:30

On Monday 11 September 2017, at 09:30-11:30 (BY INVITATION ONLY)
At the premises of the Finnish Institute of International Affairs
Kruunuvuorenkatu 4, 2nd floor, Helsinki

In popular media and public discourse, security dynamics in the Arctic are often linked to military and hard security questions. However, most of the practical work done in international Arctic cooperation focuses on issues of human security. As the Arctic is getting increasingly global, intensifying climatological, environmental and socio-economic dynamics affect the daily practices of people living in the north and emphasize the importance of a broader approach to security in the region.

This seminar will provide a broad overview of the human security thematic in the Artic, with a specific focus on the Barents region. How to understand human security in the Arctic? What are the key societal, economic and environmental challenges that face the Barents region? What is the current state of indigenous issues? How can technology and particularly digitalization help in adapting to the on-going changes in the region?
