Foreign Affairs Council promotes the EU Arctic Information Centre

The Foreign Affairs Council of the European Union accepted on Monday 12th May conclusions on developing an EU policy towards the Arctic region. The text includes a paragraph supporting the establishment of the EU Arctic Information Centre with an office at the Arctic Centre of the University of Lapland, Rovaniemi.

Francis Joy: Sámi and Rock Paintings (lecture in English) in Korundi

Francis Joy works as a researcher at the Arctic Centre, University of Lapland Faculty of Art and Design. For the past eight years, Francis has conducted fieldwork and interviews with Sami persons regarding shamanism and rock paintings in Finland, as well as extensive research into the old Sami shaman drums which survived the Christian purges of the 17th and 18th centuries. A lecture on this topic will be presented this evening at 18.00pm at Korundi Art Museum, Rovaniemi.

First issue of the new Barents science journal published

The first issue of a new academic journal "Barents Studies: Peoples, Economies and Politics" is published. The new journal consists of multidisciplinary peer-reviewed articles, book reviews and presentations of young scholars and their Barents related research. The journal is published in printed as well as in electronic form and it is free of charge for all interested readers.

Reindeer grazing may counteract effects of climate warming on tundra carbon sink

Local reindeer grazing history is an important determinant in the response of an ecosystem's carbon sink to climate warming, say researchers at the Arctic Centre of the University of Lapland. Their study was published in the journal Nature Climate Change on 16 March 2014. The research project has been funded by the Academy of Finland.

Barents Café: How to catch the best photos of the northern lights

In a late Friday evening in Arktikum, two arctic photographers from AV-Lappi, Timo Veijalainen and Miika Sirkiä, will guide us to the world of nature photos and tell how to catch the best photos of the aurora borealis. Amateur photographer and wilderness guide Pekka Koski will show some pictures of aurora borealis over Rovaniemi. The event is part of the “Scientific tourism and service design” project, coordinated by the Arktikum Science Centre, Arctic Centre at the University of Lapland.
