Extractive Industries Working Group (EIWG)

The extractive industries working group (EIWG) of the International Arctic Social Sciences Association (IASSA) is an interest group of researchers based in all northern and many other countries, working in social sciences on some aspect of extractive industrial development in the North. The main disciplines represented by its members are social anthropology, political science, international relations, and sociology.

Our members expertise covers all possible aspects of research on industrial development, for example extractive industries and global politics, international relations, impacts on indigenous subsistence economies, impacts on cultures, worldview spirituality and sacred sites, in the North, community viability, strategic impact assessments, international regulations and performance standards.

Group members have worked in almost all Arctic regions where extractive industries are active presently. We can therefore provide contacts for interested researchers and other parties in all these regions to experts with year-long or decade-long research experience on the ground.

EIWG formed during the international arctic social sciences congress in 2008 in Nuuk, Greenland. The group has given itself a mission statement and charter which was approved by the IASSA council in 2009.

This page contains our membership names, email contacts, and fields of expertise to give you an overview.
