Seminar brings Nordic reindeer husbandry discussions to Rovaniemi

Reindeer herding and land use management – Nordic perspectives Seminar gathers reindeer herding researchers and experts to Rovaniemi, Finland 19th–21st October 2014. The main focus of the seminar, held in Arktikum, is on issues related to reindeer herding and land use questions in the Nordic reindeer herding area.

Ainu-Sámi Seminar 17th October 2014 in Rovaniemi

The third Ainu-Sámi Seminar will be held on 17 October 2014 in Rovaniemi, Finland. Themes of the seminar are related to gender aspects in Ainu cultures, self-identification and Sami rights and perspectives related to mining activities.

Social sustainability issue of Barents science journal published

The second issue of a new academic journal Barents Studies: Peoples, Economies and Politics is published. The new journal consists of multidisciplinary peer-reviewed articles, book reviews and presentations of young scholars and their Barents related research.

The top Arctic institutes in Europe propose establishment of the EU Arctic Information Centre

Nineteen top institutes on Arctic excellence in Europe propose establishment of the EU Arctic Information Centre as a network undertaking and with the office at the Arctic Centre of the University of Lapland. The functionality of the Centre was tested in one and a half year Preparatory Action and it was shown to be feasible and useful. The thorough study is presented in the Network Feasibility Analysis report, which is published in the final seminar of the project on September 11, in Brussels.

Arctic Centre, jointly with Sámi Education Institute, SIIDA Sámi museum, University of Montréal and University of the Arctic Thematic Network on Arctic Law, is organizing an indigenous rights-holder workshop “Experiencing and Protecting Arctic Sacred Sites and Culturally Important Landscapes – Creating Partnerships with Mutual Respect” to be held in Inari/Aanar June 11–13, 2014.
