Oulu of Birds flies to Arktikum

The Aves Ouluensis exhibition presents the beauty of birds with vital and lyrical photos by Lauri Lajunen, the rector of the University of Oulu, and Jari Peltomäki, professional nature photographer. The photo exhibition will take place at the Arktikum Science Centre from 24th of October 2013 to 29th of January 2014.

Rovaniemi hosts stakeholder consultations on EU Arctic Policy

The European Commission is interested in listening to the views of Arctic stakeholders – those actors who influence and are affected by changes occurring in the region. Therefore, the EU has allocated EUR 1 million for a project aimed at compiling different perspectives on Arctic developments and EU’s role in the Arctic and producing an EU Arctic Impact Assessment Report.

Barents Editors’ Forum in Kirkenes

Editors-in-chief from the Barents region will meet for the very first time in Kirkenes, Norway, on October 1–3. The Barents Editors’ Forum is organized by the Barents Mediasphere project and there will be some 15 participants from many major editorial offices from northern Finland, Norway, Russia (Murmansk and Arkhangelsk regions) and Sweden, both from Radio and TV, electronic and print media.

EuroBirdwatch on Saturday, October 5, on the Arktikum bank

The EuroBirdwatch is BirdLife International’s annual festival of events which invites all citizen members from all over Europe to get out and observe and explore birds. The local ornithological association, the Birdlife Finland and the Arctic Centre will arrange a EuroBirdwatch event in Rovaniemi on Saturday, October 5, from 10 am to noon on the river bank next to Arktikum House.

Sacred sites in the Arctic need protection – First International declaration drafted

For the first time, over 70 sacred sites custodians, indigenous people's organizations, scientists, policy makers and members of civil society gathered in Finland to draft a joint Conference Declaration that states recommendations and guidelines for policy-making related to sacred sites in the Arctic and that calls for better recognize, legally protect and manage the sacred sites and sanctuaries of indigenous peoples in the Arctic region.
