Paula Kankaanpää appointed to the Finnish Environmental Institute

Professor Paula Kankaanpää, director of the Arctic Centre at the University of Lapland, will move to the Finnish Environmental Institute (SYKE), based in Helsinki. Starting in August, she will take the position as the new Director of the Marine Research Centre.

Second Arctic Human Development Report released

The second volume of the AHDR – Arctic Human Development Report: Regional Processes and Global Linkages ¬¬– has just been released by the Nordic Council of Ministers. The first report was published in 2004.

Business community perspectives to the changes in the Arctic needed

A workshop session “Business voice to Arctic change” aims at gathering and discussing business community perspectives to the changes in the Arctic and the measures needed to advance adaptation. Ecosystem-level consequences of climate warming in tundra under differing grazing pressures by reindeer

Grazing by reindeer (Rangifer tarandus L.) affects vegetation and soil microbial processes in tundra ecosystems. It is considered that grazing can induce two alternative vegetation states that differ in plant species composition and the rate of nutrient cycling. The doctoral dissertation of Master of Science Maria Väisänen shows that the grazing history by reindeer, with the associated vegetation shift from dwarf shrubs to graminoids, can significantly alter the ecosystem-level consequences of climate warming.
