New title for the science journal – Barents Studies: Peoples, Economies and Politics

Title of the new academic journal that will be developed by a project consortium led by the Arctic Centre has been reformed. The new title of the journal is Barents Studies: Peoples, Economies and Politics. The journal will provide scientific knowledge and latest research news related to developmental processes within the Barents Region.

Decline of vegetation seasonality is increasing greening in the Arctic

A new NASA-funded study "Temperature and vegetation seasonality diminishment over northern lands" published in Nature Climate Change reports that decreasing temperature difference between the seasons in the North is increasing plant growth and blurring the distinction between the normally more-seasonal North and abutting less-seasonal South. Research Professor Bruce Forbes from the Arctic Centre, University of Lapland was one member of the international team of researchers participating in the study.

Italian and Finnish Arctic experts, researchers and business representatives meet together in Rovaniemi on Tuesday, March 12, in a seminar “Italian-Finnish Cooperation in the Arctic Region: A Great Opportunity”.

Beyond the individual: the notion of group in human rights research

The Northern Institute for Environmental and Minority Law at the Arctic Centre will host a workshop to address the notion of collective rights in Human Rights Research. The workshop will take place in Rovaniemi from April 10 to April 12.

New book about the proposed Nordic Saami Convention

Research Professor Timo Koivurova from the Northern Institute for Environmental and Minority Law (Arctic Centre at the University of Lapland) and Professor of Law Nigel Bankes from the University of Calgary (Alberta, Canada) have been the editors of the new book called "The Proposed Nordic Saami Convention: National and International Dimensions of Indigenous Property Rights".

Conference on indigenous sacred sites in the Arctic

The Arctic Centre at the University of Lapland will organize an international conference on indigenous sacred sites in the Arctic. The conference “Protecting the sacred: Recognition of Sacred Sites of Indigenous Peoples for Sustaining Nature and Culture in Northern and Arctic Regions” will be held in Rovaniemi and Pyhätunturi, Finland, on September 11–13.

European Commission approved preparatory project for EU Arctic Information Centre

The European Commission has selected a consortium led by the Arctic Centre, University of Lapland (Rovaniemi, Finland) to carry out an one million euro project* to produce a “Strategic Environmental Impact Assessment of development of the Arctic”. The project will last eighteen months during 2013–2014.
