  • Conference on indigenous sacred sites in the Arctic

    The Arctic Centre at the University of Lapland will organize an international conference on indigenous sacred sites in the Arctic. The conference “Protecting the sacred: Recognition of Sacred Sites of Indigenous Peoples for Sustaining Nature and Culture in Northern and Arctic Regions” will be held in Rovaniemi and Pyhätunturi, Finland, on September 11–13.

  • European Commission approved preparatory project for EU Arctic Information Centre

    The European Commission has selected a consortium led by the Arctic Centre, University of Lapland (Rovaniemi, Finland) to carry out an one million euro project* to produce a “Strategic Environmental Impact Assessment of development of the Arctic”. The project will last eighteen months during 2013–2014.

  • NIEM examines Arctic Law in Finland and in China

    The Northern Institute of Environmental and Minority Law (NIEM) in the Arctic Centre at the University of Lapland has received funding from the Finnish Academy to study and compare Arctic Law and Governance in Finland and in China. From the scientific point of view, the project is to fill in a knowledge gap related to the topic, especially in Arctic International Law.
