Across the Arctic Ocean - Russian Arctic Expeditions

The Arctic Centre Library’s new Book Exhibition presents Russian Arctic explorers and their expeditions from the beginning of 18th century to the end of 20th century.

Across the Arctic Ocean - book exhibition introduces both well-known and forgotten Russian Arctic navigators. They repeatedly set sails very dangerous, hard and sometimes their last expeditions. The variety Russian literature and unique pictures of Arctic Expeditions are collected to the Arctic Centre. The exhibition asks: "What makes people to go to the Arctic Region? Is their sacrifice worth the goal?
  
Russia has always taken an active part in exploration of the Arctic Region. Fearless navigators have done a lot of expeditions across the Arctic Ocean including the expeditions to the North Pole. Many areas, seas, islands and straits found by Russian Arctic explorers are named after them. Their names tell us about Russian explorers’ great contribution to studying on the Arctic Region. A lot of them gave their lives while exploring the Arctic.

Across the Arctic Ocean - book exhibition opens on Thursday 17th December 2009 at 14 p.m., at the Arctic Centre Library, in the Arktikum building (Pohjoisranta 4, Rovaniemi). The exhibition introduction texts and program are written in Finnish, Russian and English. The exhibition is open until 15th March 2010. The library is open from Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 17 p.m.  Warmly welcome!
