Researchers are also encouraging citizens to report their snow-related observations through various online services. In the National Snow Seminar 2023 the organizers gave an official opening declaration of the winter season.
The 12th National Seminar on Snow on the name day of Pyry (blizzard in Finnish) will be held the first time in Rovaniemi.
The seminar is extended to two-day event on 31 October - 1 November 2024 and will be hosted by the Arctic Centre, University of Lapland, in Rovaniemi at Arktikum building. Prior to the seminar, attendees will have the opportunity to join a self-funded excursion to the Arctic Space Centre of Finnish Meteorological Institute in Sodankylä on Wednesday 30 October.
Rovaniemi event is free of charge. Lunches are self-paid. Sodankylä excursion is with a separate registration fee (90 €) that covers the transport between Rovaniemi and Sodankylä and a dinner.
Presentations will be 10-15 min and they can be held either in English or in Finnish. The seminar will cover a range of topics including various aspects of snow research, life in snowy environments, and the role of citizen science.
Deadline for registering a presentation and registering to the Sodankylä excursion is on Monday 30 September 2024.
