Recognition of the Ainu as an Indigenous People in Japan: Legal Implications for their Right to Traditional Salmon Fishing

Prof. Kamrul Hossain’s recent article – Recognition of the Ainu as an Indigenous People in Japan: Legal Implications for their Right to Traditional Salmon Fishing – published in the International Journal of Minority and Group Rights (IJMGR, Brill 2021) investigates Ainu Indigenous people’s traditional fishing rights as part of Indigenous peoples’ rights. In this context, the article examined the legal situation of the Ainu as part of the international and national regulatory processes available.

The article particularly underlined the conflicting elements prevailing in the local legislations contradictory to Japan's supreme law – the Constitution – and subsequent policy developments as they apply to the Ainu. Access the article from here.
