The Finnish Independence Day on 6th of December 2022 marks the 30th anniversary of the opening of the Arktikum building. On the day of the celebration, admission to the exhibitions is free of charge. The Arctic Market Days are held during the same week, 9 – 11 December.

The second week of December is particularly eventful in Arktikum. On the Independence Day of Finland 6.12.2022 visitors are welcome to the exhibitions without an admission fee. Free admission does not apply to group reservations made in advance.

The Arctic Market Days bringing together local handcrafters, producers and artists, will be held from Friday to Sunday 9 – 11 December. The event is a great opportunity to get high-quality Christmas gifts or delicacies for the Christmas table.

Also the Arktikum Café serves visitors in addition to normal opening hours on Independence Day from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and during the Arctic Market Days from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Arktikum building was opened to the public on the 75th anniversary of Finland's independence on December 6, 1992. The motive behind the establishment was to share knowledge on the development and conditions of the northern regions, serve scientific research, distribute information to decision-makers, and strengthen the identity of the northern population.

The operators in the house are the Arctic Centre at the University of Lapland, The Regional Museum of Lapland and Arktikum Service Ltd.
