Nordic Tipping Week

21.10.2025 9:00–24.10.2025 17:00

Where: Helsinki and Rovaniemi, Finland

When: 21.-23.10.2025 in Helsinki and 23.-24.10.2025 in Rovaniemi

Purpose of the event: The first part in Helsinki focuses on the interdisciplinary science of AMOC tipping and its broad impacts, whereas the second part in Rovaniemi focuses on local knowledge, adaptive capacity of northern livelihoods and knowledge and skills through stakeholder interaction.

Background:
Recently, the scientific community has drawn the political attention towards one of the tipping elements in the Earth’s climate system - The Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC), which is risking collapse in the face of warming climate and could severely disrupt both the climate system and societies, especially in areas close the North Atlantic, such as the Nordic Countries.

October 2025, the Nordic Council of Ministers is funding a workshop and a report on the direct and indirect impacts of AMOC tipping points on the Nordic region.

The event is organized in two parts. The first part will take place in Helsinki (21.-23.10.2025) and focus on the interdisciplinary science of AMOC tipping and its broad impacts, whereas the second part will take place in Rovaniemi (23.-24.10.2025) and focus on local knowledge, adaptive capacity of northern livelihoods and knowledge and skills through stakeholder interaction. The first day in Rovaniemi will be organized in Finnish, the second one in English. For the second day, some researchers from the Helsinki event will also join us (arriving on a “science train” on Friday morning).
