Sámi Sacred Sites excursion: 2021-2022

Photographs taken by Francis Joy are from 2021 and 2022 of international students enrolled in the Arctic Studies Program undertaking fieldwork at a Sámi sacred site and visiting a local souvenir shop in order to learn about Sámi religion, spiritual traditions, beliefs, and practices, as well as attending a hands-on workshop to learn about the use of reindeer antler, bones, and skin as well as seal skin for making clothes, handicrafts and jewelry with.

A meeting with Julia Hochwald at the Lauri House, Rovaniemi, who taught the students about how natural products including textiles, clothes, and jewellery are made by Sámi handcrafters on the Kola Peninsula, north-west Russia.

A fieldwork visit where international students in November 2022 met Ari and Irene Kangasniemi who are local artists and handcrafters using reindeer antlers, bone, and skin to make natural products. On this fieldwork excursion, students learned how to make amulets.

As part of the education on the Arctic Studies Program, students are pictured on a fieldwork visit to Somosenkirkko (Church of Somosem), which is an ancient Sámi offering place located in Oikarainen which is 24km from Rovaniemi center. Today, the site is used by the Lutheran Church.
