Delegation from Yamal-Nenets visiting Arctic Centre
16.5.2007 8:00
The anthropology and Russian research group at the Arctic Centre organises a visit by key stakeholders from an important Siberian reindeer herding and industrial region: the West Siberian Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Okrug. The delegation will visit Finnish Lapland and Northern Norway.
The main purpose of their visit is to get acquainted with international research results on the coexistence of industry with reindeer herding and other forms of nomadic livelihood, which the Arctic Centre researchers study in the framework of the ENSINOR project . The guests representing politics, industry and reindeer herding in YNAO also aim to learn from the Fennoscandian experience in regulating different forms of land use.
The 30 members of the delegation come between 15/05 and 18/05 2007 to Finland. Their programme includes meetings with the Provincial Government of Lapland, Lapland regional Council, the city of Rovaniemi, the Forest Administration, the reindeer herders Union and the Saami parliament. The group will make an excursion to impacted reindeer pastures in the Vuotso region.
The group will continue to Norway on the 19/05 – 21/05, where we organised together with the International Centre for Reindeer Husbandry meetings with the municipalities of Kautokeino and Hammerfest, the World Reindeer Herder’s Union, Saami University College, and Statoil. The visit also includes an excursion to Statoil’s new LNG plant in Hammerfest.
The programme is coordinated by Senior Researcher Florian Stammler
