12.10.2009 13:30
The Academy of Finland’s travelling road-show stopped at the University of Lapland and at the Arctic Centre on October 14th for a day of presentations and discussions.

Senior Science Adviser Tiina Petänen and Science Adviser Eeva Sievi delivered detailed presentations on behalf of the Academy to a number of graduate students and graduate school organizers during the morning session at the University of Lapland. In particular, the presentations focused on the goals and good practices of the graduate schools, career and funding opportunities within the Academy, as well as international mobility. The presentations encouraged PhD students for career planning already at an early stage of studies. Doctors are needed except as professional researchers, also as high-level experts at different sectors of society and business. The Academy of Finland highly recommended PhD students for visiting and doing part of their research abroad, at latest after doctoral defence.

In the afternoon, the guests were greeted to a reception at the Arctic Centre where Director Paula Kankaanpää and Päivi Soppela, Coordinator of ARKTIS Graduate School, gave presentations on behalf of the Arctic Centre and ARKTIS. The presentations focused on future research opportunities at the Arctic Centre, as well as a presentation commemorating 7 years of ARKTIS operation. The presentations were followed by a roundtable discussion, which was participated by many of ARKTIS’ current students.

ARKTIS Graduate School would like to thank the Academy of Finland, and in particular Tiina and Eeva, for their visit to Rovaniemi and their active participation in the day’s events.
