CALL for status students in the Arctic Doctoral Program

The Arctic Doctoral Program, ARKTIS, opens a Call for five (S) status student positions starting 1 April 2012. The positions are intended for doctoral students with a higher university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) who will conduct their PhD degree at the Universities of Lapland, Oulu, Helsinki and Eastern Finland at in one of the disciplines of the Arctic Doctoral Program.

The theme of the multidisciplinary Arctic Doctoral Program is ‘Social and Environmental Impacts of Modernization and Global Change in the Arctic’ (www.arcticcentre.org/arktis). The disciplines of the school are environmental politics, environmental economy and environmental law, political science and international relations, cultural studies, sociology, biology, ecology and cultural, economical and physical geography. Arctic Doctoral Program is supported by the Ministry of Culture and Education and the Finnish Academy, and directed by the Arctic Centre at the University of Lapland, Finland. ARKTIS has ca. 20 research students:

1) O-position students, who are funded by the Ministry of Culture and Education
2) S-position students, who have been accepted to the doctoral programme and received its status but who have funding for their PhD from other sources.

The program provides scientific supervision and advice to doctoral students for their studies and interaction with other students working in related disciplines. The students can apply funding for educational activities and international research visits from the Arctic Doctoral Program. The students can also benefit from the contacts of the program and will be informed about funding opportunities. If the positions funded by the Ministry of Culture and Education (O-positions) are vacated before the end of their funding periods, the students with status position have priority to apply for them.

The application should include:
- a free-form application letter, briefly describing the idea of the applicants PhD work and why she/he is applying for the program
- a summary (2-3 pages) of the applicant’s curriculum vitae and publication list, and a list of the grants/scholarships received for doctoral studies
- a summary (1-2 pages) of the education plan (including courses) for a doctoral degree with a time schedule, and a research plan for doctoral thesis (max 3 pages)

The application should include information regarding at what university and department the applicant conducts her/his postgraduate studies. The application should include also the name and address of the supervisors if they are named. The applicants should also include information about any planned, applied or already granted financing for their doctoral studies.

The written applications should be directed to the Directory Board of the Arctic Doctoral Program and sent preferably by e-mail by 1 March, 2012 at 13:00 to Administrative Secretary Riitta Aikio forename.surname@ulapland.fi The applications should be in English.
