International conference on Nomadic and Indigenous Spaces: Productions and Cognitions

27.1.2011 14:21

Nuccio Mazzullo, Florian Stammler and Rudolf Havelka, as members of the Sustainable Development Research Group and of the Anthropology Research Team at the Arctic Centre, will participate to the international conference “Nomadic and Indigenous Spaces: Productions and Cognitions” that will be held in Leipzig on 3-4.02.2011.

The theme of the conference is to analyse different ways and dynamics of perceiving and producing space, both symbolically and materially, and how this category is used among different world nomadic peoples in the interaction with institutions and the state, in order to secure their livelihoods, create identities and pursue political strategies. The conference approach aims to be multidisciplinary and aims to understand how human practice operates with different conceptualization of space, as exemplified by the case studies illustrated during the conference.

The conference is jointly organized by the Leibniz-Institut für Länderkunde the Max Planck Institute for Social Anthropology, and the University of Leipzig, on behalf of the Collaborative Research Centre SFB 586 “Difference and Integration”.  Nuccio Mazzullo is currently employed at the Leibniz-Institut and therefore has been involved in the organization of the conference.
