Funding for the Finnish International Polar Year research projects

Academy of Finland granted more than 760 000 euros for ice and climate studies.

The funded research activities take part in Kinnvika project led by University of Lapland’s Artic Centre.
 
Research group led by Arctic Centre´s Senior Scientist, Dr. John Moore received 370 000 euros for ice core drilling and radar survey in Vestfonna Glacier in Nordauslandet in Svalbard.

Research of spatial and temporal variability of snow properties on Vestfonna led by Professor Matti Leppäranta received 153 200 euros and Professor Veli-Pekka Salonen was granted 240 000 euros to study Quaternary environmental changes of ice-free terrain in Nordauslandet.. Both researchers are from the Helsinki University.

Kinnvika is a multidisciplinary research project of more than 50 scientists from 10 countries to monitor global change and study the human activity on Arctic islands. The project takes place in Nordauslandet in north-western part of Svalbard.
