The top Arctic institutes in Europe propose establishment of the EU Arctic Information Centre
8.9.2014 10:16
Nineteen top institutes on Arctic excellence in Europe propose establishment of the EU Arctic Information Centre as a network undertaking and with the office at the Arctic Centre of the University of Lapland. The functionality of the Centre was tested in one and a half year Preparatory Action and it was shown to be feasible and useful. The thorough study is presented in the Network Feasibility Analysis report, which is published in the final seminar of the project on September 11, in Brussels.
The Analysis identifies the products and the services with which the Centre can improve (1) access, (2) dialogues and (3) dissemination of relevant and updated Arctic information and knowledge. It describes how the Centre aims at facilitating interaction between science and policy both within the EU and outside of it. By establishing the EU Arctic Information Centre, the network wants to ensure effective use of the scattered Arctic information in Europe for which there is great need due to the environmental, economic and societal changes that are taking place in the Arctic.
The Preparatory Action that produced altogether five extensive reports was a 1 million Euros and 18 months project in 2013-2014. It was funded by the DG Environment of the European Commission.
