WAYOUT – Aalto University’s design students’ expedition to Lapland
15.10.2010 12:58
The Arctic Science Centre at the University of Lapland offers this autumn experimental design inspired by Lapland.
A group of design students from Aalto University, Helsinki escaped urbanization to find inspiration up north in Lapland. This experience in the cold Lappish winter led them to interpret their personal points of view into concrete works of art. Way Out gathers these eleven experiments from one shared exploration.
The exhibition Way Out is a collection of student works done during a course called Design Experimentation and Exploration. This course was organised in Aalto University School of Art and Design by the department of Design in early 2010. The objective of the project was to introduce experimental and creative approaches to the MA students of the School of Design. The project comprised a period during which students familiarized themselves with creative processes and expressed artistic attitude and free expression in their own creative work. In the end students produced concrete artefacts with experimental design and prepared an exhibition to show these results.
This year, the theme of Design Experimentation and Exploration was Lapland: the roots of our culture. Eleven students and two tutors travelled to Sodankylä and neighbouring areas in northern Finland to research the theme and get inspired. They gathered information about Lapland from various sources and combined that to their own experience from the excursion. After processing and interpreting interesting aspects of Lapland, the students stepped into the concrete working process. They started to make artefacts and artworks based on their own individual points of view. During the whole course, the students also kept a working diary where they documented and reflected their creation process in visual and written form.
Design Experimentation and Exploration project is coordinated by Maarit Mäkelä and Simo Puintila.
