The Arctic Graduate School, ARKTIS, opens a call for one (1) full-time student position funded by the Ministry of Education in Finland, and one (1) associate or status (S)- student position for the period 2 February 2005 - 31 December 2006
The research student positions are intended for graduate students with a higher university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) who will conduct their doctoral degree at a Finnish University in one of the disciplines of the Arctic Graduate School. The full-time position funded by the Ministry of Education is intended to a doctoral student of the University of Lapland. The salary is at the moment 1648,48 euros (A18 position without service year bonus). The student selected to status (S) position should have funding for her/his studies from other sources. The theme of the multidisciplinary Arctic Graduate School is ‘Social and Environmental Impacts of Modernization and Global Change in the Arctic’ (www.arcticcentre.org/arktis). The disciplines of the school are environmental politics, environmental economy and environmental law, political science and international relations, cultural studies, sociology, biology, ecology and cultural and economical geography. Arctic Graduate School is supported by the Ministry of Education and the Finnish Academy, and directed by the Arctic Centre at the University of Lapland, Finland. ARKTIS has 20 research students:
1) O-position students, who are funded by the Ministry of Education in Finland
2) S-position students, who have been accepted to the graduate school and received its status (S), but who should finance their PhD by other sources.
The graduate school provides supervision and advice to doctoral students for their studies and interaction with other students working in related disciplines. The students can apply funding for educational activities and research visits from the Arctic Graduate School. The students can also benefit from the contacts of the graduate school and will be informed about funding opportunities. If the positions funded by the Ministry of Education (O-positions) are vacated before the end of their funding periods, the students with S-status have priority to apply for them.
Both positions can be applied by the same documents. The applicants should mark to their application which position they apply; ‘O-position’ or ‘S-position’. Same application can also be used to apply for both positions. The application should include, in addition to a free-form application letter, the following documents:
- a summary (1-2 pages) of the curriculum vitae and publication list, and a list of the grants/scholarships the applicant has previously received for postgraduate studies
- a summary (3-4 pages) of the educational plan (including courses) for a doctoral degree with a time schedule, and a research plan for doctoral thesis
- no recommendations, but the contact information of two people from whom the graduate school can ask a statement from the applicant if needed
The application should include information regarding at what university and department the applicant plans to conduct her/his postgraduate studies, if this is not yet confirmed. The application should also include the name and address of the main supervisor (or suggested supervisor). S-students should include information about planned, applied or already granted funding for their doctoral studies.
The written applications should be directed to the Directory Board of the Arctic Graduate School and sent preferably by e-mail by 13 January, 2005 1 pm to: paivi.soppela@ulapland.fi.
