Ice researcher Emilie Beaudon from the Arctic Centre takes part in a one month expedition to Jan Mayen island and writes a blog on her research and experiences.

The Jan Mayen project is led by John Hulth from the Norwegian University of Life Sciences located in Ås close to Oslo. Dr Anna Sinisalo from the University of Oslo and former researcher at the Arctic Centre in Rovaniemi will contribute to the mass balance study by performing radar measurements of the snow distribution (and bottom topography). Johan Snygg, our “safety” guy, climber and boat builder in Gothenburg, will be helping also with one or several firn core(s) drillings on the glacier.
The goal of the expedition is to determine the mass and energy balance as well as measure the thickness of the glaciers on Jan Mayen. For example measuring the density and studing the snow property on a vertical profile allows to calculate the annual snow accumulation rate. These studies allows to study the relationship between climate change and the glacier. The expedition lasts for one month, from mid-March to mid-April 2010.
Emilie’s workplace, The Arctic Centre at the University of Lapland, is a research centre and science communicator located near the Arctic Circle. The Arctic Centre conducts internationally high-level multidisciplinary research, carries out project services, maintains the Science Center Exhibition, Science communications and a Library, and also provides education.
