Discussion of the impacts and strategies to cope with climate change in the Arctic

The Konrad Adenauer Foundation and Arctic Centre at the University of Lapland organize together 18th–19th November 2014 an expert roundtable “Climate Change, Adaptation and Sustainability in the Arctic – Assessing alternatives towards and beyond Paris 2015” at the Arktikum House.

The expert roundtable seeks to address both the internal and external dimensions of the debate on climate change, adaptation and sustainability in the Arctic. Over two days experts, policy-makers of both national and international level, representatives of indigenous peoples as well as of non-governmental organizations, business community and other stakeholders will be brought together to discuss the impacts and strategies to cope with climate change in the Arctic. They will address the challenges associated with sustainability and governance in the different Arctic regions and deliberate on how Arctic actors can contribute to further progress in the global climate negotiations.

Open roundtable session on Tuesday 18th November

The opening panel of the roundtable is held on Tuesday 18th November at 17.00 – 19.30 and it is open for all interested audience. The session includes opening remarks and an expert panel on Climate change in the Arctic: scientific assessment, local observations and consequences for EU Arctic Policy. The opening panel is moderated by Markku Heikkilä, Arctic Centre Head of the Science Communications, who also gives an introduction to the UN climate negotiation process and its relation to the Arctic.
