Call for ARKTIS Graduate School

The Arctic Graduate School (ARKTIS), coordinated by the Arctic Centre, at the University of Lapland, opens a call for five (5) full-time RESEARCH STUDENT POSITIONS funded by the Ministry of Education for the period 1.1.2007 – 31.12.2010.

Research student positions are intended for graduate students with a higher university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) who plan to conduct their doctoral degree at a Finnish University in the disciplines of the Arctic Graduate School. The positions will be located at the Universities of Lapland, Oulu and Helsinki.

The theme of the multidisciplinary Arctic Graduate School is ‘Social and Environmental Impacts of Modernization and Global Change in the Arctic’. The research themes of the school deal with arctic and northern questions and comprise:
- climatic and environmental questions
- societies, cultures, livelihoods and economy
- wellbeing of local and indigenous people
- mitigation and adaptation to the changes  
- environmental and minority law

The disciplines of the school are social sciences - such as sociology, political science, environmental politics and international relations, economical studies, cultural studies, law and education – as well as biology and geography. The working language of the school is English.

The students who will be selected to the school should conduct their doctoral thesis full-time and actively participate in the education, supervision and other activities of the school. Salaries will be based on the new university-wide salary system and belong to the teaching and research staff’s demand level 1-2 (1512.89 – 1619.36 euros/month). In addition, there will be a personal salary component which is a maximum of 46% from job specific salary component. Payment of the personal salary component is staggered according to the new salary system initialization.

The application should include, in addition to a free-form application letter, the following documents:
1) a curriculum vitae
2) a publication list
3) a research plan for doctoral thesis including a time schedule (max 5 pages)
4) an educational plan for a doctoral degree including a time schedule
5) a list of the grants/scholarships previously granted for postgraduate studies
6) names and contact information of supervisors
7) contact information of two people from whom the graduate school can request a statement concerning the applicant’s qualifications if needed.

In addition, the applicant should inform to which themes of the school she/he applies for and at which university doctoral studies would be conducted. The applicant shall present her/his degree certificates if she/he is selected to the school.
