Public lecture about the Ainu peoples status in Japan

The ARKTIS Graduate School organizes a public lecture on Thursday 10th September about the Ainu indigenous peoples status in Japan.
At the lecture, Professor Hiroshi Maruyama tells about the juridical questions related to the role of local Ainu residents during the Nibutani and Biratori dam projects in Hokkaido, the northernmost island of Japan. More ethnological point of view is presented by colleague Professor Takashi Matsuna.
In addition, Ph.D. student Masumi Tanaka from the Arctic Centre presents her ongoing fieldwork and photos of the Sami traditional ecological knowledge. Chair of the lecture is Dr. Elina Helander-Renvall, Director of the Arctic Indigenous Peoples Office at the Arctic Centre.
The lecture is in English and it is held on Thursday 10th September at 14-16 hours at the University of Lapland, Main Building Lecture Hall LS05.
The public lecture is organized together with Arctic Indigenous Peoples Office, Arctic Graduate School (ARKTIS) and International Studies Centre ISC from the University of Lapland. The lecture is part of the Arctic Centre’s 20th Anniversary Year. Welcome!
Professors Hiroshi Maruyama and Takashi Matsuna from Muroran Institute of Technology, Hokkaido are visiting the Arctic Centre at the University of Lapland for three weeks.
