Staging Sámi in the City exhibition in Gallery Kopio

19.10.2018 10:00

”Staging Sámi in the City” is the exhibition of Tanja Joona and Joonas Vola and it is open in Gallery Kopio in the University of Lapland in Rovaniemi on 23.10.–29.11.2018.

The presented photographic illustrations are artistic interpretations of Sámihood in urban space.  The exhibition is not an ethnographic study but a collection of staged situation as an effort to communicate scientific discourses with pictorial narratives, to negotiate the iconic and sometimes stereotypical representations of indigeneity with the changing live dynamics of people’s daily lives in the urbanizing world.

The exhibition is conducted as part of the NUORGÁV: An urban future for Sápmi? The influence of Sámi youth organizing and political networking on the Sámi policies of Nordic cities – project (2014 -2017), funded by the Research Council of Norway, to provide illustrative material for presenting the project’s results. The original idea is by the project researcher Tanja Joona, who is the producer of the exhibition. The photography and artistic work is conducted by Joonas Vola. Printing is made by Mainostaso Oy, Rovaniemi.
