ABOUT US


The Arctic Centre at the University of Lapland is a significant expert institution in Arctic issues. Our staff conducts internationally renowned multidisciplinary research, train specialists in Arctic affairs, and increase knowledge and understanding of northern regions and their people, with a view to promoting sustainable development in the Arctic.

EDUCATION

Our Arctic Studies Program introduces students to themes and issues in Arctic research. The ARKTIS Arctic Doctoral Programme provides research training and arranges public lectures on topical themes.

RESEARCH


Global Change Research Group studies ecological, environmental and social changes in the Arctic. Sustainable Development Research Group examines how societies and communities adapt to change, and studies the politics and identities of indigenous peoples. The Northern Institute of Environmental and Minority Law specialises in environmental issues and human rights.

SCIENCE CENTRE

Science Centre popularises Arctic research and science through exhibitions encouraging active participation, provides educational programmes for schools, and arranges public events. The Arctic in Change exhibition focuses on the natural environment and culture of the North.

INFORMATION SERVICES

The Arctic Centre provides information services both through its library and its Science Communications Unit. The Arktikum library is open to the public. The Science Communications Unit gathers and disseminates information. It maintains several online services specialising in the Arctic and the Barents Region.
