Director / Research Professor

By training Kamrul is a researcher in the field of international law. He has been working on a diverse range of Arctic issues for almost a decade. The main focus of his research currently lies in international environmental law that applies to the Arctic as well as in human rights law, in particular, concerning the rights of the indigenous peoples, again with a focus on the Arctic. Over the years Kamrul has extensively published in all areas of Arctic governance (climate change; marine environment, maritime de-limitation and law of the sea; human activities in the Arctic such as shipping and resource extractions including mining and, onshore and offshore oil and gas developments; marine bio-diversity conservation; and human rights and human security dimensions applicable to the Arctic) highlighting legal, institutional and policy perspectives.

Regionally my research interests are focused on land use rights in the Finnish and Swedish Lapland. Main research interest is aimed to local peoples various land use rights, especially in the area owned by Finnish and Swedish States.

Research interests:
Indigenous peoples’ rights, including Sámi people’s rights in Finland. International human rights and environmental law as it applies to indigenous peoples. Heinämäki has a special interest in the Arctic legal co-operation, and she acts as a vice-leader of the University of the Arctic Thematic Network on Arctic Law.

Sébastien researches primarily on issues related to environmental (human) rights. His main field of expertise relates to the protection and respect of human rights in the context of climate change and climate policies and the role played by various international institutions. Sébastien’s research also relates to public participation in international environmental governance.

Marcin has a background in sociology and Scandinavian studies and currently works in the ECoHuCy research project, which goal is to redefine cybersecurity with Arctic human as a central point of the concept. Marcin’s research interests are focused on digitalization in relation to languages, environment, health, well-being and urban life in the Arctic.

Bamidele “Dele” Raheem

Bamidele “Dele” Raheem

Senior Visiting Researcher

Dele had his Masters and doctoral degrees from the University of Helsinki. His Masters degree was from the department of Food Chemistry & Technology while the doctoral degree in Food Sciences was from the department of Food and Environmental Sciences. He has gained extensive research and industrial experience in the last three decades. He also obtained the Post Graduate Certificate in Education from the University of Greenwich, London and a certificate on Vocational Teachers Pedagogy from Haaga-Helia University of Applied Science, Helsinki. Dele’s research interest is in food bio-processing, preservation and other crosscutting issues related to food security.

Mirva Salminen

At the Arctic Centre, Mirva is carrying out research on digitalization and cyber security in the Arctic from the human security point of view. In her doctoral dissertation, she is scrutinizing the impacts of security commercialization on Finnish national security. Prior to joining the Arctic Centre, Mirva worked in research and expert positions in the field of cyber security in both public and private sectors.

Karolina works as a visiting researcher and is a PhD Candidate at the University of Lapland, Faculty of Law. She holds master degree in law from University of Wroclaw. Within her doctoral studies, Karolina is working on access to cultural heritage of indigenous peoples as their collective cultural right within the framework of international law.

Punam Noor

Punam Noor

Punam Noor’s research focuses on accommodating indigenous peoples' traditional knowledge in international climate change law with special reference to the European High Arctic, where she combines conceptual frameworks with indigenous traditional knowledge for the promotion of indigenous peoples' resilience against climate change. She is a PhD candidate at the Faculty of Law of the University of Lapland. She earlier had a Masters in Comparative and International Law from University of Eastern Finland. She specialised in Environmental and Climate Change Law and she did European Union Law as her minor studies. She has completed Postgraduate Diploma in Law from Northumbria University in the UK. Prior to that, she completed Bachelors in Law from University of London.

Gerald Zojer

Visiting Researcher

The focuses of Gerald's research lay in the fields of Energy politics, environmental politics, and natural resource management; Sociology of technology studies and Political ecology and hegemony theories. Currently he is involved in the research project HuSArctic (Human Security as a promotional tool for societal security in the Arctic: addressing multiple vulnerability to its population with specific reference to the Barents region), where he is focusing on socioeconomic effects of current developments in the Arctic region.
