Global challenges in the Arctic from the perspective of environmental protection and sustainable development are the focus of the first In the Spirit of the Rovaniemi Process Conference.

The goal of the conference is to present the latest research scientific knowledge about the global processes as they become local realities. Even if the Conference is scientific in orientation, it aims to bridge science and knowledge into action by bringing top scholars to share their research results, and to organize joint discussion with the leaders of Arctic Cities. Conference includes special Arctic Cities Panel.

The Conference is composed of autonomous scientific sessions. Each session will host 1-2 invited experts.

Scientific sessionsRovaniemi Process: past, present, future (Plenary session)

  • Arctic responses to global environmental problems
  • People and extractive industries
  • Tourism in the Arctic
  • The Arctic in the global economy
  • Indigenous peoples in cities
  • Arctic global flows

All the sessions will address each of the three cross-cutting themes:

  • Arctic Cities and global processes
  • Management and governance in the Arctic
  • Arctic together with non-Arctic

The conference is organized jointly by the City of Rovaniemi and the Arctic Centre of the University of Lapland, Finland.
