Mobility CAES Network was established and started its activity in 1998. It is addressed to PhD students and post-doctoral scientists and acts as an institution for research education in the circumpolar northern countries. The purpose of the Network is to foster interdisciplinary research and partnership between young researchers who are engaged in natural, cultural and socio-economic aspects of arctic environmental studies. A co-ordinating role in the Network is given to senior researchers (working group of the Network), although contribution from PhD students and postdocs is of greatest importance. The main activity of the Network is to conduct a series of interdisciplinary research education courses covering some important topics related to arctic environment, such as reindeer herding, industrial impacts, climate change, forestry, etc. The courses are conducted annually in various regions of the northern circumpolar countries and are intended to be linked to each other. Complementary activities of the Network are an electronic network, research workshops and mobility of young researchers. The CAES Network co-operates with the Circumpolar Social Science PhD Network (CASS) and is involved in the development of the University of the Arctic.

Annual Courses & Workshops

A chain of annual PhD courses is planned to have some overlapping topics that will make them being tightly linked to each other.

The courses that have been or are planned to be organised:

Each course is designed around a key topic that is examined at different viewing angles. For example, the key topic for the first course is 'Reindeer', so reindeer was studied from biological, environmental, social, cultural and economical points of view. This means that such multiple and interrelated aspects as reindeer ecophysiology, environmental conditions, climate change, environmental management, culture, identity and livelihood, working conditions for reindeer herders, and many others were risen in the course program.

The key topic of the course 2001 is 'Industrial Impact'. The course program will cover various aspects of interaction between industrial, natural and social environments. This will include industrial production technology, arctic settlement and industry development, balance between industrial and traditional activities, animal and human health, industrial impact on vegetation and soil, restoration ecology, interactions of acidification with climate change, and many others.

As preparatory actions for annual courses the CAES Network organises workshops with keynote lectures and student presentations. The program of the workshops consists of presentations and discussions in smaller groups and in plenum. Combination of the workshops with international conferences on related issues gives the students possibility to attend the conference besides their participation in the workshop. The most important outcome of the workshops is the students' feedback on the content of the coming course.

Exchange & Mobility

OBS! CAES doesn't have funds for 'Exchange and Mobility' Program for 2004

Exchange and Mobility program for target group (PhD students and post-docs) is aimed at supporting their visits to other Nordic and north-west Russian research institutions in order to become familiar with facilities, methods and publications as well as to meet other researchers at the host institutions. The Exchange and Mobility program is also supporting participation in workshops and courses organised within the CAES Network.

Electronic network (CAES-list)

Between workshops and courses, information exchange is executed electronically via listserver 'CAES-list'. So far we have about 100 subscribers among PhD students, post-docs and senior researchers from different countries. The information distributed in the list includes both CAES matters and other information related to arctic environmental studies, such as calls for proposals, announcements of international events, new publications, etc.

Besides being just an information board the CAES-list serves as an arena for discussions. During the workshop 'Reindeer 2000' students initiated the idea of creating an interdisciplinary glossary of concepts and terms related to arctic environmental studies. As a matter of fact, researchers with different backgrounds, with respect to disciplines or nationalities, happened to use the same terminology for more or less different concepts or different terminology for expressing the same concept. This can cause misunderstanding and irritation in a scientific discussion.

Anybody who is interested in joining the CAES-list can send e-mail to address:
