| The CAES Network organised a Workshop 'Reindeer 2005' 28-29 August 2003
in Saariselkä, Finland in conjunction with the 11th Arctic Ungulate
Conference. The Workshop followed a tradition started in Tromsoe 1999, when
CAES had its first workshop 'Reindeer 2000' in conjunction with the 10th
Arctic Ungulate Conference.
The Workshop was open to students studying reindeer husbandry and related topics and their supervisors and teachers. The purpose of the workshop was to promote interdisciplinary discussion in studies relating to reindeer and reindeer husbandry. In particular, the CAES Workshop 'Reindeer 2005' was a planning step and get-together for the international PhD course 'Reindeer as a keystone species in the North II: Biological, cultural and socio-economic aspects' that is proposed to be held in Northern Fennoscandia and Kola Pensinsula in September 2005. During the workshop, important contacts were established and the course planning started. The proposed PhD course follows the example of the CAES PhD course 2000 which was a great success and reached very good results in both scientific and social terms. During the workshop, acknowledged CAES actors were invited to give keynote lectures. PhD student Dessilav Sabev presented how he envisions an interdisciplinary approach to research being developed in his own field and studies. Dr. Katja Ruth presented an overview to current environmental situation on the Kola Peninsula as related to industrial impacts and reindeer husbandry. Students' presentations provided overviews of their proposed and ongoing studies. At the end of the workshop there was a group session where the theme 'interdisciplinary' was discussed and the future course was brainstormed. Former CAES students Sari Stark and Robert Weladji lively presented their experiences from the earlier courses. The workshop was financially supported by NorFA.
