Arctic Graduate School ARKTIS

ARKTIS is a multidisciplinary graduate school coordinated by the Arctic Centre at the University of Lapland. The theme of the school is ’Social and Environmental Impacts of Modernization and Global Change in the Arctic’.

The objectives of the ARKTIS are:

to foster co-operation between different disciplines in Arctic research,
to raise the scientific level and appreciation of multidisciplinary research,
to intensify research education, and
to give tools to understand how various changes in the Arctic impact the social conditions and development.

ARKTIS has 22 research students enrolled at the universities of Lapland, Oulu, Joensuu and Helsinki. The disciplines are social sciences - such as sociology, political science, environmental politics and international relations, economical studies, cultural studies, law and education – as well as biology and geography. The graduate school has about 50 supervisors or other associate members from institutions in the Nordic countries, UK, USA, Canada and Russia. So far six students have defended their doctoral theses.

ARKTIS organises annual research seminars, public lectures, method studies and it supports students’ mobility and forms a national and international network of Arctic research.

In 2007, ARKTIS initiated the network of Barents Arctic Network of Graduate Schools (BANG) which brings together Ph.D. students and experienced senior scientists from the Barents region.

ARKTIS was founded in 2003 at the Arctic Centre and is funded by the Finnish Ministry of Education and the Academy of Finland.

In celebration of the Arctic Centre’s 20 year anniversary, ARKTIS created a presentation describing the school and the work of its current researchers. All are welcome to view the presentation (pdf).

Arktis-tutkijakoulu järjestää Barents-aiheisen yleisöluentosarjan Lapin yliopiston Arktisessa keskuksessa keväällä 2010. Luennot ovat avoimia kaikille kiinnostuneille.

Arktis-tutkijakouluun uusia tutkijakoulutettavia (22.12.2009)
Arktis-tutkijakoulun johtokunta on valinnut kuusi uutta tutkijaa opetusministeriön rahoittamille kokoaikaisille tutkijankoulutuspaikoille vuosiksi 2010–2013. Tutkijankoulutuspaikat on tarkoitettu väitöskirjatyön tekemiseen.

Väitös: Poliittinen saamelaisuus (2.12.2009)
Yhteiskuntatieteiden maisteri Sanna Valkonen avaa väitöskirjassaan vakiintuneita saamelaiskäsityksiä. Valkonen tutkii, miten nämä käsitykset ovat rakentuneet, tulevat ylläpidetyiksi ja millaisia vallan ulottuvuuksia niihin liittyy.
