Studies at ARKTIS

The idea of ARKTIS is to educate high level experts who are well familiar with the Arctic issues in their own disciplines and who have a broad view and understanding of the social, economic and ecological problematics of the Arctic. The ARKTIS community has several groups which interact with each other: (i) Directory Board, (ii) team of scientific advisers (Scars) and (iii) the thematic research groups, which are led by research professors and participated by students and their supervisors. The students are recruited to the research groups according to their research topics.

The students are introduced to their rights and responsibilities and training in the doctoral programme by their supervisors and coordinator. ARKTIS has developed a system to improve long-term planning of students’ graduate studies. Each student is responsible for designing a Personal Study Plan (PSP) for her/his doctoral studies and thesis, and for choosing one main adviser from the ARKTIS SCAR group (Scientific Advisers) for commenting it. SCARs are senior associate members of ARKTIS who are available for students for advice and supervision. Students and SCARs meet and communicate regularly. Students should also have regular meetings with their faculty supervisors. Students update their PSP once a year and report the advance of their studies to the ARKTIS Directory Board.
