The wide range of educational activities of the Arctic Centre serves the
objective of increasing knowledge, awareness and understanding of the
Arctic region. Education ties together every section of the Arctic Centre
and covers every level from school children to PhD and research
training.
ARKTIS and Researcher Training
The Arctic Doctoral Programme (ARKTIS) is a multidisciplinary doctoral programme at the Arctic Centre, University of Lapland. The theme of the programme is "Social and Environmental Impacts of Modernization and Global Change in the Arctic".
ARKTIS has 20 doctoral students. ARKTIS is one of the doctoral
programmes funded by the Ministry of Education, Finland, and it started
in 2003.
In addition to ARKTIS, most research groups
at the Arctic Centre include post-graduate students funded by outside
sources. They prepare their theses in various research fields. The
research project leaders that are the research professor and the senior
scientists of the Arctic Centre supervise these students.
Arctic Studies Program (ASP)
The Arctic Studies Program (ASP)
is organized and coordinated by the Arctic Centre and the International
Studies Centre at the University of Lapland. The courses in the program
are taught by research professors, senior scientists and other
researchers at the Arctic Centre. The researchers, who represent various
nationalities and disciplines, use an interdisciplinary approach to
study northern questions.
The ASP offers a unique opportunity to
specialize in Arctic issues. The approach of the ASP is truly
multidisciplinary and it provides comprehensive knowledge of the
physical, environmental, social and cultural aspects of the Arctic. In
addition to the courses the students do individual research on Arctic
issues under the supervision of Arctic Centre’s senior scientists. All
teaching is in English.
The Barents Arctic Network of Graduate Schools (BANG)
The Barents Arctic Network of Graduate Schools (BANG)
brings together Ph.D. students and experienced senior scientists
specialised in problematics of the Barents region representing various
disciplines.
