Senior scientist Minna Turunen has background in biology and ecological botany. Her projects during the past ten years have been multidisciplinary and encompassed not only scientific knowledge e.g. in biology, anthropology and geophysics, but also viewpoints of local people including reindeer herders. These studies have focussed  on the effects of climate change on reindeer pastures and  reindeer herding,  and adaptation strategies and capacity  of herders to cumulative impacts of climate, environment and socio-economical changes.
Most of her earlier research has encompassed the effects of global change on boreal and subarctic vegetation in Northern Fennoscandia. She has long-term experience in experimental field research addressing the ecophysiological responses, adaptation and defence mechanisms of forest and mire plants in changing environments.
 
Erikoistutkija Minna Turunen on taustaltaan biologi ja kasvitieteilijä (ekologinen kasvitiede). Hänen tutkimuksensa ovat kymmenen viime vuoden aikana olleet monitieteisiä,  käsittäen paitsi mm. biologisen, antropologisen ja geofysikaalisen tiedon yhdistämisen, myös  paikallisten asukkaiden, kuten poronhoitajien näkökulman. Nämä tutkimukset ovat keskittyneet mm. ilmastomuutoksen vaikutuksiin porolaitumiin ja poronhoitotyöhön, sekä poronhoitajien sopeutumisstrategioihin ilmaston, ympäristön sekä sosioekonomisten tekijöiden  muutoksesta seuranneisiin kumulatiivisiin yhteisvaikutuksiin.
Suurin osa hänen aiemmista tutkimuksistaan on käsitellyt globaalimuutoksen vaikutuksia boreaaliseen ja subarktiseen kasvillisuuteen Pohjois-Fennoskandiassa. Hänellä on pitkäaikainen kokemus kokeellisista kenttätutkimuksista, jotka ovat liittyneet metsä- ja suokasvillisuuden ekofysiologisiin vasteisiin, sopeutumiseen ja puolustusmekanismeihin muuttuvassa ympäristössä.
