Mari Kuoppamaa (née. Hagberg) has a PhD in Quaternary geology from 2009. She did her thesis "Characteristics of the temporal, spatial and taxonomic resolution of palynological data from the northern boreal forest of Finnish Lapland" in the University of Oulu, and used palynological methods, GIS and modeling techniques to investigate the vegetation changes in northern Finland caused by the changes in land-use and climate conditions.

Mari is currently working as a postdoctoral researcher in the RISES (Resilience in Social-Ecological Systems of Northwest Eurasia) and HUMANOR (HUMan-ANimal Relations Under Climate Change in NORthern Eurasia) projects. Her work in the projects consists of the palynological and coprophilous fungal spore investigations of the social-ecological systems in Yamal, Mongolia, and Northern Fennoscandia, where reindeer herders and pastoralists have used the landscape in different ways through the past 15 centuries, and linking the palaeoecological data with the oral histories and archaeological data from each research area.

Mari is also part of the PAGES LandCover6k working group which brings together paleoecologists, historians, archeologists, and modelers to explore and provide new information about antropogenic land cover change. It aims to create products suitable for climate modelers and climate change policy makers. (http://www.pages-igbp.org/ini/wg/landcover6k/intro)

Before coming to Arctic Centre, Mari has been working at the Department of Geosciences in the University of Oulu as a researcher in global change projects PINE, Nordpine, and Millennium. She has also been actively involved in the two NordForsk research and training networks POLLANDCAL (2001-2005) and LANDCLIM 10000 (2009-2011).

Keywords: palaeoecology, palynology, coprophilous fungal spores, land-use, vegetation, palaeoclimate, reindeer

Mari Kuoppamaa (ent. Hagberg) väitteli tohtoriksi maaperägeologiasta vuonna 2009. Väitöskirjassaan "Characteristics of the temporal, spatial and taxonomic resolution of palynological data from the northern boreal forest of Finnish Lapland" hän käytti siitepöyanalyysiä yhdessä paikkatieto- ja mallinnusmenetelmien kanssa Pohjois-Suomessa tapahtuneiden kasvillisuuden ja maanköytön muutosten tutkimisessa.

Tällä hetkellä Mari työskentelee tutkijatohtorina Arktisen Keskuksen RISES ja HUMANOR projekteissa, joissa hänen tehtävänsä on käyttää siitepölyanalyysiä ja lantasieni-itiöiden tutkimusta poronhoidon ja paimentolaisuuden aiheuttamien kasvillisuusmuutosten määrittämiseen Jamalin niemimaalla, Mongoliassa ja Pohjois-Fennoskandiassa.

Asiasanat: paleoekologia, siitepöly, lantasieni-itiö, maankäyttö, kasvillisuus, poro
