Unique Place for Research
"In my PhD research, I study how soft law co-operation, particularly the Arctic Council, can handle the impacts of climate change in the Arctic, and at the university’s Arctic Centre and Northern Institute for Environmental and Minority Law, you can find leading expertise in this field.
As a truly unique place for research, you are able to study and do your research under the guidance of top experts in the field of Arctic and Northern issues. Furthermore, the working environment is friendly. Here, both Finns and foreigners work together, and my two supervisors are very approachable: I have a work room next to the office of one of the professors, and the other professor visits regularly to discuss issues.
The Finnish study system emphasises learning: students take responsibility for their own learning, which stimulates thinking and deeper understanding. I appreciate that since I am here to gain more expertise.
Furthermore, there is plenty of support available: there are study circles for postgraduate students and personal guidance by distinguished professors. Research information, like databases and the latest publications, are easily accessible through the university’s information services. For writing articles, I have received support from native speakers of English at the university’s Language Centre . This has helped me to get my research articles published in scientific journals, which is very important for my research prospects in the future."
