Arctic Studies Program (ASP)
25 - 60 ECTS cr.

Introduction

The Arctic Studies Program (ASP) offers a unique opportunity to specialize in Arctic issues. The approach of ASP is truly multidisciplinary and it provides comprehensive knowledge of the physical, environmental, social and cultural aspects of the Arctic. In addition to the courses the students do individual research on Arctic issues under the supervision of Arctic Centre’s senior scientists. All teaching is in English.

The program is organized and coordinated by the Arctic Centre and the International Studies Centre at the University of Lapland. It is connected to the Arctic Centre’s Research Department and the courses in the program are taught by senior scientists and other researchers at the Arctic Centre.

The Arctic Centre’s researchers, who represent various nationalities and disciplines, use an interdisciplinary approach to study northern questions. The research sheds light in many ways on opportunities in and threats to Arctic areas. In addition to a comprehensive foundation on all aspects of the Arctic, students have an opportunity to specialize in advanced themes such as Arctic indigenous studies, Arctic governance, and Global change and sustainability. The programme also contains field trips, e.g. to Kola Peninsula in Russia.
