Profile
Monica Tennberg earned a master degree in political science at the University of Helsinki (1990). She continued her studies at the University of Lapland. She received a licentiate degree in 1994 and a doctoral degree in social sciences in 1998. In her doctoral dissertation she studied the negotiations to establish the Arctic Council in 1996 and the development of relations between states and indigenous peoples in the cooperation. After dissertation, she has studied climate change politics and adaptation in the Arctic, international environmental cooperation in Northwest Russia, indigenous peoples as international political actors and recently she has focused on politics of development in the Barents Region. She works as research professor (sustainable development in the Arctic) at the Arctic Centre.

- DAMOCLES - Developing Arctic Modeling and Observing Capabilities for Long-term Environmental Studies (EU 6th Framework Program 2005-2009).
- INDIPO - Indigenous Peoples as International Political Actors: Indigenousness and Construction of Political Agency, funded by the Academy of Finland 2005-2007. Leader Monica Tennberg.
- International Environmental Cooperation in Northwest Russia (2002-2007). This project was funded by the Academy of Finland by post-doc grant and travel grants. Responsible researcher Monica Tennberg.
- Governance of Renewable Natural Resources in the Northwest Russia (2004-2007). This research project is part of the Russia in Flux research programme of the Academy of Finland. The leader of the project is professor Soili Nystén-Haarala, University of Lapland, Faculty of Law.
- Arctic Adaptations (FIN-CAVIAR 2007-2009). This project is funded by the Finnish Academy and it is part of pan-arctic CAVIAR (Community adaptation and vulnerability in Arctic regions) research consortium. Leader Monica Tennberg.
- BIPE - Barents International Political Economy. This Nordic-Russian researcher network was funded by Nordforsk (2010-2012). The coordinator of the network was Monica Tennberg.
