Change and variability of Arctic Systems Nordaustlandet, Svalbard - "Kinnvika"

A multinational initiative to enhance our understanding of the Arctic system - to monitor global change and to study effects of human activity on Arctic islands.

The Nordaustlandet initiative

We are 58 scientists representing ten nations that have identified the Svalbard Archipelago and in specific the  Nordaustlandet Island as a regional target that bring the dimension of exploration and broadband science into the IPY scheme. All together there were 69 people working in the project of which 62 participated in the Kinnvika expeditions.

IPY - International Polar Year

The International Polar Year (IPY) was a large scientific programme focused on the Arctic and the Antarctic from March 2007 to March 2009.  It covered two full annual cycles from March 2007 to March 2009 and involved over 200 projects, with thousands of scientists from over 60 nations examining a wide range of physical, biological and social research topics.
